Erica Strofton
(nee Eden),
President, 2011-2012

. My father’s family were Quakers and my grandmother suggested I should be educated at Sibford School which she had heard about in the Quaker journal ‘The Friend.’  I joined Sibford during the autumn term of 1958 and it took me a while to settle into boarding school life. I was homesick for quite sometime but eventually I began to settle down and accept Sibford for what it was.

I was extremely shy in my youth and Sibford gave me a huge amount of confidence to enable me to cope with the outside world, especially in the retail trade when I went to work in Selfridges in Oxford Street.  Also, the friendships that were formed at Sibford were very special and remain so today which is a great credit to the school.

I married at 20 and have a son called Adam who now works in social care in London.

Following a divorce, I married Nigel, who has been in the Wine Trade all his working life and is now semi retired.  We live in a village called Heath and Reach near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

One of the highlights of our life together was in 1992 when Nigel became Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, a City of London Livery Company. I was his ‘Mistress’.

We visited many Livery Companies and met an amazing number of interesting people.  The year finished with a Ladies Banquet at Guild Hall and I heard my mother say “I never thought I would live to see my daughter on the arm of the Lord Mayor of London”.

We also enjoyed overseas trips because Nigel has represented England Hockey over 65s.

I have worked throughout my life and since retiring have become an active member of the village WI and Secretary of the Heath Village Barn, an old historic Meeting hall.  I also thoroughly enjoy painting in water colours, making jewellery and I attend a weekly yoga class. I love cats and have a chocolate point Siamese called Bournville who rules the roost!

I have enjoyed my time on the SOSA Committee and I look forward with great anticipation the next couple of years.
